International Climate Projects

Denmark has promised to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 21 per cent. As a supplement to domestic initiatives the Danish government has engaged in development of CDM and JI projects within the framework of the Kyoto Protocol.

International climate projects, as the Clean Development Mechanism ( CDM) and Joint Implementation ( JI), are a part of the flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol. The objective of these mechanisms is to ensure cost-effective and sustainable emission reductions. CDM projects is hosted by developing countries and JI projects takes place in Eastern Europe. The achieved reduction in greenhouse gas emissions generated by the projects is transferred as  carbon credits to Denmark used as a supplement to meet our international climate commitments.

Denmark has already demonstrated great strength in efficient energy production and development of new environmental technologies. These efforts will be carried out through a close cooperation between the Danish Energy Agency, Danish Embassies abroad, Danish companies and local companies and national and regional governments. For project host countries, the mechanisms provide measures for the transfer of capital and modern technology promoting economic growth and a cleaner environment.

As an example the Danish Energy Agency’s has assisted China in the replacement of an old polluting coal factory by a biomass plant. This is an example of a well executed CDM project that have transferred Danish technology and promoted sustainable development. In addition to the project a reduction in greenhouse gas emission has generated carbon-credits. Read more about the Danish climate projects under Denmark's climate project.

The Danish state has decided to compensate the delegates at United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) emissions from transport in particular air travel through a CDM project. The Brick Kilns project in Bangladesh will replace 20 outdated brick kilns with new efficient brick kilns. The project will cut 100.000 tones of CO2 emissions each year and improve air quality in one of the world’s most polluted cities. This project is set to ensure that COP15 will be climate neutral
