Within the EU, climate and energy issues have become
increasingly more important over the past years. The climate and
energy policy area in the EU is based on three pillars: security of
supply, competitive market conditions and sustainability.

Once
again the energy area has become an important issue in the EU, just
as we saw when European countries first cooperated on a treaty to
establish the European Coal and Steel Community in 1951 and the
European Atomic Energy Community in 1957.
Today, EU cooperation in the energy policy area rests on the three
pillars that are also seen in Denmark's energy policy:
- security of supply
- competitive markets
- sustainability
The strategy paper "Energy Policy for Europe" was adopted by the
European Council in 2007. This visionary action plan is the first
step towards increasing the security of supply in Europe, securing
competitive EU economies and combating climate change.
A number of policies are to ensure that these objectives are met.
