Chosen pilot project

One project has been selected as pilot project under the National Climate framework

Sustainable sludge disposal by BioNorden A/S

This project applies an OHD system (Oxidizing Hydrolytic Destruction) to the treatment of wastewater sludge at the “Miljøcenter Syd” in Nakskov. The OHD process enables a sustainable conversion of liquid organic waste including sludge from municipal sewage works, industrial wastewater and slurry from agriculture. This happens through a regulated and controlled process without environmental impacts and environmentally burdening residuals. At the same time, the project eliminates the damaging effects that sludge generally inflicts on the environment such as foul odour and greenhouse gas emissions. The converted organic material can be reused in agriculture, which thereby reduces the use of traditional NPK fertiliser with up to 40%.

The OHD technology will continuously be analysed and evaluated by the Danish Energy Agency and the Environmental Protection Agency in preparation for potentially unexpected environmental impacts in the process.

The project is chosen as a pilot project for the Danish Energy Agency’s National Climate Projects as the technology meets the preliminary additionality standards, as the project will be the first of its kind in Denmark and because the project has a substantial emission reduction potential.
