The Danish state develops climate projects through the two mechanisms Joint Implementation (JI) and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). JI is climate projects in countries with a reduction commitment under the Kyoto Protocol – contrary to CDM projects that take place in countries that are part of the Kyoto agreement but have no commitments of their own.
The work with CDM is based on the State’s experiences with environmental support to developing countries. Thus, the majority of the projects are located in Malaysia, Thailand and China, though a few projects are situated in Egypt, India, Cyprus, Bangladesh and Armenia. The countries typically have a low energy efficiency and thereby a high potential for emission reductions.
The development of CDM projects is a direct involvement, as Denmark for most projects in question is involved in the development as well as implementation of the projects. The Danish Energy Agency’s local project coordinators or the local Danish embassy keep in contact with the project owners and cooperate with the national authorities, relevant organisations and consultants. The method provides a better understanding of national conditions in order to regularly adapt activities and involve the necessary national actors.
In the table below you can see an overview of the Danish state’s CDM projects, project type and contracted reduction volume. Detailed project briefs on all projects can be read and downloaded by clicking on the project name.
In addition you can read and download the Danish Energy Agency’s publication: The Danish JI and CDM Programme - Seven years experience with climate projects around the world. The publication includes an introduction to JI/CDM and project briefs for all of the Danish Energy Agency’s projects.
