The Danish state develops climate projects through the two mechanisms Joint Implementation (JI) and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). JI is climate projects in countries with a reduction commitment under the Kyoto Protocol – contrary to CDM projects that take place in countries that are part of the Kyoto agreement but have no commitments of their own.
In principle, JI projects can be developed in all countries with a reduction commitment, but they primarily take place in Eastern Europe, where old technology creates an extensive call for CO2 reducing investments. The reduced carbon emissions from the projects are converted into credits which can be sold to industrialised countries. Thus JI makes it possible for industrialised countries to supplement domestic emission reductions with international climate projects.
In the table below you can see an overview of the Danish state’s JI projects, project type and contracted reduction volume. Detailed project briefs on all projects can be read and downloaded by clicking on the project name.
In addition you can read and download the Danish Energy Agency’s publication: The Danish JI and CDM Programme - Seven years experience with climate projects around the world. The publication includes an introduction to JI/CDM and project briefs on all of the Danish Energy Agency’s projects.
