Hess Denmark ApS, operator for the companies in licence 7/89 and 2/06, has completed the appraisal well Rigs-4/4A (5604/30-5) in the Danish part of the North Sea. Oil was discovered in chalk layers.
DONG E&P A/S was managing the drilling operations of the well, which was drilled as a near vertical well and reached total depth of 2968 metres below mean sea level in clay stones of Early Cretaceous age.
The well discovered oil bearing chalks of Late Cretaceous age. A section of the well was cored, and a sidetrack Rigs-4A was drilled approx. 1 kilometer towards southeast in order to appraise the extent of the oil-bearing layers. No production testing was performed. The commerciality of the oil-bearing chalk layers in Rigs-4 and the sidetrack Rigs-4A will now be evaluated closely.
The Rigs-4/4A appraisal well was drilled in corporation between license 7/89 awarded in 1989 in the 3rd licensing round (South Arne Field) and license 2/06 awarded in the 6th licensing round in 2006.
Rigs-4 was spudded 3 July 2007 with the jack-up rig ENSCO 70 at the location 56°1'8.59" N; 4°17'48.06" E (UTM zone 31; 6,209,095.75 N; 580,832.9 E), where the water depth is 55 metres. The well will be permanently plugged and abandoned.
