Oil and gas licences

Information about oil and gas licences, licensees and operators

The A.P. Møller Sole Concession of July 8th 1962 initially comprised the entire Danish area - onshore as well as offshore. After an agreement in 1981 between A.P. Møller and the government, A.P. Møller has gradually relinquished acreage. Presently the Sole Concession comprises the so-called 'Contiguous Area' as well as delimited areas around 5 other fields.

In the more recent licences, granted to oil companies in connection with licensing rounds or the Open Door procedure, the licences commence with an exploration period of six years. During the exploration period the oil companies must carry out work programmes – e.g. seismic surveys and exploration wells. If necessary the exploration period can be extended by further periods of up to two years. However, the total exploration can only under special circumstances exceed ten years.

If the oil companies prove commercial deposits of oil or gas and commit to undertake development, the companies are entitled to an extension of the licence to a delimited area including the deposit for a period of up to 30 years.
