Geothermal energy licences
The extraction of geothermal heating requires a licence pursuant to the provisions of the Danish Subsoil Act.
Existing licences
In 1983, DONG Energy was awarded an exclusive licence to explore for and extract geothermal energy in Denmark. This licence expires in 2013. With effect from 30 September 2010 DONG Energy has relinquished the major part of the unused areas under the licence, which now only comprise an area around the Thisted geothermal plant and an area around the Aars-1 geothermal well.
In 2001, a licence was issued to explore for and extract geothermal energy in the metropolitan region to the Metropolitan Geothermal Alliance (HGS). HGS comprises the companies Centralkommunernes Transmissionsselskab I/S (18 pct.), DONG VE A/S ( 28 pct.), KE Varme P/S (18 pct.), Energi E2 (18 pct.), and Vestegnens Kraftvarmeselskab I/S (18 pct.) . DONG is the operator of the licence. In connection with the issuing of the licence to the HGS companies, DONG relinquished areas comprised by its licence dating from 1983, with the result that these areas are now covered by the licence issued to HGS.
In 2007, a licence was issued to explore for and extract geothermal energy in the Sønderborg area to DONG VE A/S (50 pct.), and Sønderborg Fjernvarme A.m.b.a. (50 pct.). DONG is the operator of the licence. In connection with the issuing of the licence, DONG relinquished areas comprised by its licence dating from 1983, with the result that these areas are now covered by the new licence.
