The EU Presidency
The Presidency of the Council chairs the meetings of the Council. The Presidency is rotated between the 27 EU Member States every six months.
The Presidency of the Council (EU Presidency) organises the work carried out by the Council and chairs the Council's meetings. Each EU Presidency selects a number of important areas and issues which it will like to promote during its presidency.
The EU Presidency shall act as a neutral and impartial chair and act as a mediator, if the Member States are having difficulties reaching an agreement on legislative proposals from the Commission.
The rotation of the EU Presidency has been decided by the Council.
The EU Presidency is held by Sweden during the second half of 2009. It will be followed by Spain in January 2010.
The Swedish Presidency has prioritised the following areas within energy: energy efficiency, security of supply and an eco-efficient economy.
