Energy technology is vital for the reduction of CO2 emissions, guaranteeing security of energy supply and the competitiveness of European enterprises. The EU has therefore put forward a joint strategy for the promotion of energy technologies.
On 22 November 2007, the Commission presented a proposal for a communication on a European strategic energy technology plan (SET plan).
In its communication, the Commission describes a possible joint strategy for the promotion of energy technologies as a follow-up to the EU's decision on a common energy policy at the summit meeting on 8-9 March 2007.
The Commission proposes a coordinated strategy between the EU, European industrial enterprises, the Member States as well as prioritisation of energy technologies with emphasis on energy efficiency, renewable energy and low-carbon technologies (fossil fuel fired power plants with carbon capture and storage, and fourth generation nuclear power plants).
At the same time, the Commission proposes the establishment of new collaborative efforts:
- a steering group on strategic energy technologies, chaired by the Commission
- a European information system (energy technologies and human resources)
- industrial initiatives (wind and solar power; bio energy; advanced electricity grids; carbon capture and storage; and nuclear power)
- a European alliance between energy research institutions
- European energy infrastructure planning
- a proposal for enhanced funding and resources for energy research in Europe; and
- increased international cooperation.
